AND WE LOVE LIFE

Mixed media on tent cloth

By the time the Syrian refugee crisis garnered international media attention, Syrian women
were depicted as helpless victims of the war. Yet, for the most part, the international media
neglected these women’s role in the Syrian civil war. These women struggled to offer the
best for their families, whether by supporting their families arduous peripatetic journey in in
search of a better future or by miraculously transforming their camp community into a one
that resembles their normal lives. Women were pillars of support for their families, they
made sure that every tent felt like a warm home for the family. It’s obvious that there is an
acceptance of reality; we notice, in every camp, that tents are becoming more of homes
than a temporary settlement. We see this in the humble ways these women attempted to
personalize and settle in those camps.
